Emergency Preparedness Tips

Preparing for unexpected situations is essential for everyone's safety and peace of mind.

Natural disasters and emergencies, such as earthquakes, floods, storms and wildfires can occur with little warning. By having a well-stocked emergency kit, you can ensure that you and your loved ones are ready to handle these situations effectively and stay safe until help arrives.

Essential items for an Emergency Kit:

  • Water

At least 3 litres per person per day for at least three days.

  • Food

Non-perishable food items like canned goods, dried fruits, nuts, muesli, energy bars and baby formula if necessary to last at least three days. Consider different nutritional needs of everyone in the family from babies through to elderly.

  • First Aid Kit

Bandages, antiseptics, adhesive tape, gauze pads, scissors, tweezers, pain relief, personal medications (7-day supply of prescribed medications), and other basic medical supplies.

  • Emergency Card

Include personal information, medical details, and emergency contacts.

  • Tools and Supplies

Flashlight, extra batteries, multi-tool, whistle, battery or hand operated radio, generator and fuel, power-pack for cellphone, manual can opener to open canned food, bucket with lid and liners, dust masks and gloves, plastic sheeting and duct tape, paper maps, copies of important documents, information and contacts in a waterproof bag, cash, fire extinguisher, fire-starters with matches or lighter in a waterproof container, drinking bottles, gas cooking equipment, plates, bowls and cutlery, mobility equipment.

  • Personal Hygiene Items

Soap, hand sanitiser, toothpaste, toothbrushes, personal hygiene items, baby wipes and toilet paper.

  • Clothing and Bedding

Appropriate clothing for the season, sturdy shoes, blankets, sleeping bags, extra clothes for rain and warmth.

  • Pets

Enough pet food and medication for 7 days, bedding, pet carrier, leads or harnesses.

Having these items in an accessible emergency kit, bag or easy to carry plastic container can help ensure your safety and preparedness during an emergency.
